My SNL Broadway Skit

Hilarious in every way, especially to a Broadway lover such as myself. Just an introduction to my next award category- stage.

My Peterio Awards (Part Seventeen: Best Music Video)

377855

Simple and Epic at the same time, Beyonce's Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It). Like most of her songs, 'Singles Ladies' starts with an abundance of energy and never lets down. Combine that with the always better-dancing-than-not Ms. Knowles, a classic look and some very well crafted choreography, this memorable music video had me (and I'm sure others) practicing the same moves whenever no one is watching (and sometimes with). Hmm.... this blog just got a little too personal, didn't it?

Other Notable Nominees: Flashing Lights (Kanye West), Hot N Cold (Katy Perry), Keeps Getting Better (Christina Augilera & Lovers In Japan (Coldplay)

My Peterio Awards (Part Sixteen: Best Televised Musical Performance)

kanye_west_1

Ever the showman, Kanye West's rendition of Heartless during the Saturday Night Live not only exceeded any SNL performances in recent history, but it's on another level on its own. Accompanied with a killer song and a trippy video screen behind him, the ever evolving West manages to have fun while being "emo" at the same time. And once again, due to copyright infringements, I can only link you... so check it out.

Other Notable Nominees: Let It Be (Cast of 'Across The Universe' @ Grammys), Falling Slowly (Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova @ Oscars), Lovebug (Jonas Brothers @ MTV VMAs) & Viva La Vida (Coldplay @ MTV Movie Awards)

My Peterio Awards (Part Fifteen: Best Music Single)

paperplanes300

I'll admit I'm usually a little slow when it comes to forming an opinion regarding music. It usually takes me a little while to digest because I decide rather or not I like it. But after a year long of digestion, I can conclude that M.I.A.'s Paper Planes is the best track of 2008. Setting a new wave for the new sound for pop, the track is filled with energy and pure joy- down to the very cartoonish sound effects that deserved the cute little gunshot dance in bars across the nation.

Other Notable Nominees: 'Bleeding Love' (Leona Lewis), 'Heartless' (Kanye West), 'I Kissed A Girl' (Katy Perry) & 'Love In This Club' (Usher w/ Young Jeezy)

My Break To Linky-Link

A moment to steer away from 2008 (it was SO 5 days ago) to defer to you these five amusings on the rest of the interweb (yes, I'm still trying to incorporate that into the world).

- Vinnie Rattolle and I are so not jealous we kept a low profile this past New Year's Eve.
- In Secret is a social experiment that provokes the voyeuristic side of me.
- The Film Experience has the cutest article about everyone's favorite fembot, EVE.
- ESPN unveiled its new sleek redesign.
- Free Williamsburg looks forward to those often overlooked films this January.

The Peterio Awards will carry on again soon with the television and sports categories wrapped- maybe as soon as tonight.

My Peterio Awards (Part Fourteen: Best Sports Team)

New-York-Giants-Football-734911

A little biased, but a team with three playoff wins on the road preceding perhaps what may be the greatest upset in Superbowl history kind of cements Best Sports Team status in my book. The New York Giants went against the critics' odds and prediction to win at Tampa Bay, win at Dallas(!), win at Green Bay(!!) and then the ultimate football figurative giants, the New England Patriots (!!!). To follow then miraculous playoff season by defying more critics and clinching the NFC's number one just solidify their place amongst the greatest calendar year in the NFL.

Other Notable Nominees: Boston Celtics (basketball), Detroit Red Wings (hockey), Fresno State Bulldogs (college baseball), US Men's Basketball Team (Olympic basketball) & US Men's 4x100 freestyle relay (Olympic swimming)

My Peterio Awards (Part Thirteen: Best Individual Sports Game)

524531

The Men's Wimbledon Finals had it all- rollercoaster momentum, history on the line, a long heated rivalry and of course, plays after plays of awes and wonderment. As a long time Roger Federer fan, seeing his inevitable defeat to Rafael Nadal was extra excruciating because there were many moments during the marathon match you thought the 5-time defending champion was going to muster just enough to limp his way through it. However, it was not meant to be as the tennis world witness an unofficial changing of the guard... until Federer won the US Open later and all is right with the world once more.

Other Notable Nominees: ALCS Game 7 (baseball), Men's 4x100m freestyle (Olympic swimming), Men's 100m Butterfly (Olympic swimming) & Superbowl XLII (football)

My Peterio Awards (Part Twelve: Best Individual Sports Play)

eli-manning-to-david-tyree-in-the-play-of-the-game

Too many to choose from, the runner-ups in this category has nothing to be ashamed about. But it came down to it, Eli Manning's escaped sack to throw a ball David Tyree glued to his helmet topped the chart for me. At stake was the last shot to upset the then-undefeated New England Patriots for the Superbowl and perhaps the greatest upset in the title game's history and with all that on the line, the poise to naturally choreograph such a play by both Manning and Tyree had the Giants fanatic in my cheer and gasp even louder and longer.

Other Notable Nominees: Usain Bolt's record blazing 100m race (running), Rick Nash navigating through 5 players to score a goal (hockey), Michael Phelps's final leap during the Men's 100 butterfly (swimming) & Ty Roger's last second three pointer to upset Drake (college basketball).

My Peterio Awards (Part Eleven: Best Olympic Moment)

Olympics_Opening_Ceremony-715520

While any of Michael Phelp's narrow victories would do, it was the spectacular Opening Ceremony directed by Zhang Yimou that was overwhelmingly breathtaking to take the prize. From those drummers, to the human operated blocks, from the IMAX-size paint canvas to the final torch relay around the outer rim of the Bird's Nest, China wanted to the rest of the world to be wowed and I think it is safe to say we were more than impressed. Watch those blocks.. just watch those blocks...

Other Notable Nominees: Swimming Men's 4x100 Freestyle Relay (swimming), Men's 100 Butterfly (swimming), Men's 100 race (running) & Rohullah Nikpai wins Afghanistan's first Olympic medal (taekwondo)

My Peterio Awards (Part Ten: Best Individual Athlete)

Phelps men's journal

Was there even a doubt Michael Phelps would headline many sports outlets' year-end lists? Not only did the Olympic hero manage to capture the most gold medals (8, for those who lost count) in a single Olympic, he also got the entire nation to cheer for the theatrical ways he finished some of those races making the Beijing Summer Games one of those most Olympics in recent history. Sure, we might hear of Phelps for another four years until London, but the roar and impact he made in those two weeks in August would sustain his legacy more than enough to last us until then. It was impossible to find Olympic footage due to copyright infringement, so I got this 2007 Olympics Trial instead, the magic is still there.

Other Notable Nominees: Usain Bolt (runner), Kobe Bryant (basketball), LeBron James (basketball) & Tim Tebow (college football)

My Peterio Awards (Part Nine: Best Comedy Television Series)

1280x1024_1

So you're probably tired of my continuous praise for 30 Rock in the last few days. Well, guess what? It deserves every ounce of my respect for being the only show on television that can get me to chuckle, not smile or be amused, but actual chuckle. The chuckling is quite disturbing, that's why I don't do it often. At the top of its game, 30 Rock can swing from a long setup joke ('Fake Oprah') to a 3-second cutaway that's so ridiculously absurd and strange ('Synchronized Running') and have equal amount of laughs from both. Now when are they going to bring Floyd back for our Liz?

Other Notable Nominees: 'The Big Bang Theory' (CBS), 'How I Met Your Mother' (CBS), 'The Life and Times of Tim' (HBO) & 'Weeds' (Showtime)

My Peterio Awards (Part Eight: Best Dramatic Television Series)

wp1_1280x1024

When HBO announced they were adapting Generation Kill, Evan Wright's experiences during the early stages of the current Iraq War, into a miniseries, I was immediately curious as to how the project was going to be handled due to its near non-dramatized story with over a dozen characters. But as each episode wraps and the knit of the 1st Recon Bravo Company gradually melds with their journey to Baghdad, you can sense the urgency and anticipation of these eager soldiers readying for some combat. With added storytelling flares such as interpersonal relationships and tacked on comedic moments, the profound gem lifts Wright's source to a new eye-opening level with tales that might seem to big for the small screen.

Other Notable Nominees: 'Brothers & Sisters' (ABC), 'Friday Night Lights' (NBC/DirecTV), 'John Adams' (HBO) & 'Mad Men' (AMC)

My Peterio Awards (Part Seven: Best Non-Fiction Television Series)

It is more common for many households to tune into The Daily Show With Jon Stewart at 11pm than an actual news broadcast these days for a good reason- just watch his initial commentary on the Rod Blagojevich below. The ever everyman not only distributes the top news of each day during his show, but he also manages to drop in a few zingers and reactions that many people want to hear and are thinking. Combined with his great mixture of both current event and entertainment guests, many nights the program becomes the much buzzed chatter at local water coolers.

Other Notable Nominees: 'The Amazing Race', 'Anderson Cooper 360', 'The Rachel Maddow Show' & 'The Soup'

My Peterio Awards (Part Six: Best Actor In A Comedy Television Series)

jim-parsons-sheldon-big-bang-theory-photo

It took awhile for me to recognize how much work Jim Parsons puts into his asexual Sheldon Cooper in CBS's 'The Big Bang Theory' mainly because his portrayal can be viewed as simple slapstick at first glance. But as you continue to watch Sheldon go through countless unapologetic social awkwardness, you can't help but see how much warmth Parsons puts into a character that seems cold and heartless on paper. Along with his impeccable comedic timing, I wonder how much longer will it be before the mainstream audience catch on to his menacing genius. Just watch the hug....

Other Notable Nominees: Alec Baldwin & Jack McBrayer ('30 Rock'), Neil Patrick Harris ('How I Met Your Mother'), Lee Pace ('Pushing Daisies') & Jonny Lee Miller ('Eli Stone')

My Peterio Awards (Part Five: Best Actor In A Dramatic Television Series)

Picture 1

Known more for his comedic talents, Bryan Cranston raised eyebrows with his vivid portrayal of Walter White in AMC's other series 'Breaking Bad'. What can easily be written off as an one-note character, Cranston injects an ongoing tension between himself and others around him that translates into something relatable and eye-opening to an audience with no prior experiences as farfetched and complicated as his. What's even better is that he even capture that same energy in scenes where there are no other actors involved. Take a look....

Other Notable Nominees: Kyle Chandler & Scott Porter ('Friday Night Lights'), Paul Giamatti & Tom Wilkinson ('John Adams'), Jon Hamm ('Mad Men'), Matthew Rhys ('Brothers & Sisters'), Stark Sands & Alexander Skarsgard ('Generation Kill').

My Peterio Awards (Part Four: Best Writing In A Comedy Television Series)

NUP_112581_0355

Whenever a series mentions 'MILF Island' as a joke and then manages to carry through with it with an more than elaborate (and funny) episode, you know you have something good. Intertwine that with cultural references ('Subway Hero') and off-the-beat controversial writing ('Believe In The Stars') and it's only a matter time 30 Rock became a referenced pop culture item ('Gay For Jamie') itself. And it is just when you think the writing is beginning to get off course, I must remind you of what La Fey & Co. can conjure up with the small help of makeup.

Other Notable Nominees: 'The Big Bang Theory', 'How I Met Your Mother', 'The New Adventures Of Old Christine', 'The Office' & 'Pushing Daisies'

My Official Poster For The 8th Annual Peterio Awards

2008peteriocoverborder

Less complicated than years past, this year's poster design is rather sleek and simple. It also shies away from film- unless you count the poster child's hilarious 'Extras' cameo. For those skeptics, just wait and see... or even have a little faith.... Sorry, but couldn't resist using the reference.
