My Top Five Matt Saracen Moments on 'Friday Night Lights'

The series finale to one of the least appreciated, if not the greatest, television show came to an end last night. Along with the conclusion of 'Friday Night Lights' came the end of the story of one Matt Saracen, my favorite character on FNL, as we know it. "Seven" as his friends (save for Landry) would call him is a character you can easily root for simply because there's so much good in him. Through the course of the show's five year run, there were plenty of moments where the character and his portrayer, Zach Gilford, shined and tugged at our heartstrings. Here's just five of them, spoilers ahead:

5.
Season 1 Episode 9: "Full Hearts"
Screen shot 2011-02-10 at 11.04.35 PM
While on his first date with Julie, Matt receives a phone call from best friend
Landry that Grandma Saracen locked herself in the bathroom. Cutting his
date short, Matt rushes home and had to pretend to be his grandfather to
his dementia grandmother and sing her her favorite song.

4.
Season 1 Episode 1: "Pilot"
Screen shot 2011-02-10 at 11.19.49 PM
After Panther star quarterback Jason Street goes down with a injury,
Coach Taylor, his teammates and the rest of Panther nation calls on Matt
to fill in with the once promising season on the line. Never even thrown a
football in a game, "Seven"'s hail mary was caught and the Panther's
path to glory is temporarily restored.

3.
Season 2 Episode 14: "Jumping The Gun"
Screen shot 2011-02-10 at 11.30.55 PM
Good guy Matt spirals out of control after he realized his girlfriend
left him for a better life, his ex-girlfriend left him for a better guy,
his teammates abandoned him for a better quarterback and his father
left him to fight a war. After Coach Taylor throws him in a cold shower
to cool him down, Matt asks desperately "What is wrong with me?
Why does everybody leave me?".

2.
Season 5 Episode 13: "Always"
Screen shot 2011-02-10 at 11.40.58 PM
Courting Julie Taylor for five years led to the ultimate proposal. In true
Matt Saracen fashion, he brought his girl to the Alamo Freeze, a local
hangout where he first told her he liked her, Matt got on one knee
with his grandmother's ring and propose to the girl of his dreams.

1.
Season 4 Episode 5: "The Son"
Hearing his father had died in Iraq, Matt arrives at the Taylor household
in full composure after visiting the morgue to see his father before
crumbling into pieces. This scene perhaps sums up why Matt, and
in extension his portrayer Zach Gilford, is such a easy character to root for.

Thanks FNL, thanks for the memories.

My Friday Night Lights Miracle

Picture 2

Well, it's happening! My Dillon Panthers (and spoiler: East Dillon Lions) are going to be back for two more years. Sources say the cast will continually change much like last year with a rotating round of freshmen coming in and a slew of seniors going out. If I had it my way, we can get rid of Riggins and Lyla- those two have been on my nerves for a while now. I'm still bitter from season one. I CANNOT WAIT. (EW)

My Peterio Awards (Part Three: Best Writing In A Dramatic Television Series)

NUP_111862_0062

The intimacy felt in each episode of Friday Night Lights this season speaks volumes to the writing staff's incredible rebound from a less than stellar second season. Given the departure of not one, but two beloved characters, their send off was written with ease and poise while continuing with the FNL tradition of combining heartfelt situations with light humored ones. Rarely can television say so much with so little actions or sometimes even words. Just check out the clip below with practically no dialogue.

Other Notable Nominees: 'Breaking Bad', 'Brothers & Sisters', 'Generation Kill', 'Mad Men' & 'Recount'

My 'Brothers and Sisters' Casting Joy

scottPorter

Spoilers if you're a fellow 'Friday Night Lights' fanatic. Scott Porter, who portrays Jason Street on FNL, was benched this season for 'storyline reasons', but leave it Entertainment Weekly's bitchy spoiler king. Michael Ausiello, to campaign for Porter to be cast as the sixth sibling in another one of my favorite shows, 'Brothers and Sisters'. Check out his convincing case that had me salivating when I first clicked on his blog.

My Matt Saracen Disappointment

Reg

I think the reason most fans fell in love with 'Friday Night Lights' two seasons ago was because of Matt Saracen and Zach Gilford, who portrays him. Everything from his sudden promotion to courting the coach's daughter, we were there every moment with Matt as if we were his personal "rally girls". In a recent interview with Zap2It.com, Gilford had some strong opinion with it came to his character's relationship with Julie. He actually doesn't want them to be together and doesn't understand why Matt is attracted to Julie but cites that "he clearly is in love with her." I don't think Zach realizes the reason why many people are rooting for Matt and Julie is because we like Matt and wants him to get what he wants. My DirecTV Pride

Okay, now having DirecTV finally pays off. NBC just announced their lineup for the next season and it doesn't include 'Friday Night Lights' until January. The reason? DirecTV will broadcast all of the 13-episode season in the fall prior to the January premiere. So, which FNL diehards are going to switch satellite providers now? (TVGuide)

Sidenote: Also, An 'Office' spinoff? That just sounds lazy.

My Friday Night DVD

Look how sexy the DVD cover for the 'Friday Night Lights: Season 2' is. Sure, the show itself wasn't as brilliant as the nearly flawless first season, but hey.... news of its return just leaves that much more room for improvement.

My Friday Night Miracle

It appears NBC isn't as dumb as I thought. A deal has been reached between NBC and DirecTV that would bring my current favourite series, 'Friday Night Lights' back for a third season! This would be the second series these two companies would (campy soap 'Passions' is the first). So break out your pom-poms, we're in for another season of Dillon Panthers football. Now get Matt and Julie back together! (DeadlineHollywood)

UPDATE: Season 2 DVD is finally confirmed to be released on April 22nd. But unless season 1, the season 2 discs will include bonus features including commentary on selected episodes. (DVDFanatic)
